Weiss is archaic in his material: he shuns electronic elements and favours natural sound sources (voices, hands, feet) and employs considerable fantasy in the process of deriving sounds from objects which in their original environment have no musical function.
This is a great piece of music one of the great pieces of the late 20th century music-theatre genre. Haunting, at times frightening in part two with female voices crying like banshees overhead. I only wish I knew what it all meant? Very much in the vein of his more famous contempoary, Philip Glass, but as a great lover of Glass' music I have to say this is at times more entriguing and beautiful than Glass. You won't regret buying this music and like the previous reviewer I have been listening to it for 20 years, since it first came out in about 84, and never tire of it-what other music can boast that credibility?

I've owned this album for years, and I'm surprised it's listed under "popular music" instead of classical. I suppose it is, but only if you consider much of Phillip Glass choral pieces in that vein as well. ARCHE definitely echoes Glass's fondness for minimalisim, but I find it more atmospheric and moody in Weiss's composition. Except for a somewhat annoying section in part 2 this piece is consistant in presenting a mood of an urban landscape on a stormy day. The cover represents the feeling perfectly.
