' I first heard Philip Wilson on the Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy on the outstanding album "I Only Have Eyes For You" Wilson being the only non-brass instrument of the ensemble. Wilson programs the DMX, play bass synth and assorted percussion instruments, maybe only Laswell could persuade a drummer to make an album sans drum kit. I remember "Boat Peoples" and the "Mokassa Rock" & the ambient "Doo Root" making it on a lot of mixtapes I was making at the time. "Mokassa Rock" is an excellent track with some great synth work from Bernie Worrell & some odd bass contributions from Jaco Pastorious. The story goes something like, Wilson knew or heard Paul Butterfield was in a bar round the corner of the studio & wanted him to play on the album & went to find him. Butterfield was with Jaco who tag along & ask to play. Unfortunately Jaco playing was a bit irratic due to his, unfortunate deteriorating mental condition & what you hear is what could be salvaged. This I read in a magazine article many years ago so it may not be completely accurate, but you get the gist. Oh yeah…Jonas Hellborg slaps the shit out of his bass on a few tracks.
