Anyone who bought a lot of R&B albums in the '70s and '80s and took the time to read the credits has seen the name Fonzi Thornton; he was very much in demand as a session vocalist during that era, providing background vocals for Chic, Luther Vandross, Diana Ross, Sister Sledge, Aretha Franklin, and quite a few others. Thornton, however, didn't get very far as a solo artist, although he did record two noteworthy solo albums for RCA: The Leader in 1983 and Pumpin' in 1984. And in 2011, the Brooklyn-based Funky Town Grooves had the good taste to reissue Pumpin' as a 57-minute CD. Pumpin' contains one romantic soul ballad, "I'm a Rich Man Now," but for the most part, this is an album of energetic synth funk – and driving tracks like "Rock My Heart, Rock My World," "Tantalizin' Me," "Playmate," and "A Natural (Yesirree)" are quite representative of where funk was going in 1984. When the '80s started, horn-powered funk was still in vogue. But in 1984, funk (and R&B in general, for that matter) was becoming increasingly high-tech – and Pumpin' reflects that. No trumpets or saxophones are used, and synthesizers and drum machines are quite prominent. Some of the material has a pop/rock edge, hinting at the new wave sounds that were popular in 1984. But even so, this is an R&B album first and foremost. With the right promotion, Pumpin' would have received more exposure. But it turned out to be one of the overlooked R&B releases of 1984. The original Pumpin' LP contained eight tracks, but Funky Town Grooves' expanded version increases the number of tracks to 11 with the addition of three bonus tracks: dub versions of "Rock My Heart, Rock My World" and "A Natural (Yesirree)" and an extended vocal version of "Rock My Heart, Rock My World." For fans of '80s synth funk, Pumpin' isn't a bad listen at all. [AllMusic Review by Alex Henderson]
