England have been described as ‘the last of the great 70s symphonic prog bands.’ Drenched in Mellotron and influenced by Yes and Genesis, their Garden Shed is one of the best-loved albums to have emerged from the 1970s UK progressive scene. Last Of The Jubblies is a collection of rare non-album recordings by the band, and a treat for their many fans, showcasing their inimitable songwriting and intricate instrumental work.

England's keyboard player and Garden Shed Music Creative Director, Robert Webb said:
“The recording of Last of the Jubblies (in 1975/6) came at a time when keyboard instruments and sound effects units were still wildly experimental. The particular blend of both antiquarian and avant-garde musical instruments gave England a very special character, and heavily influenced their style of musical composition on this album.
Tony Arnold, who remastered the album during the summer of 2005 in his studios in France, has done a fantastic job of enhancing the brightness and detail of the original recordings whilst maintaining all the best elements and character of the music“.

England has a distinct sound (distinctly English, I might add), with strong influences from both Yes and Genesis. The tongue-in-cheek humor that was evident in many of the "GS" songs is in full bloom on "The Last of the Jubblies" as well. This is music from 1976 and 1977 that was part of England's second (but unfinished) album. These six songs are NOT studio demos or outtakes, or songs that just didn't make the cut onto their "GS" cd. These are all excellent songs, fairly well-recorded, and expertly played. (The sound quality of the vocals suffers a bit on some of the tracks, but it is not a serious distraction.) Multiple listens reward the fervent fan with greater appreciation and enjoyment.
This is a very short cd (a mere 37 minutes in length!), and it's tough to justify some of the higher prices sellers are asking here and elsewhere. But I would place the compositional and playing quality of this cd on a near-equal plane with "GS", and suggest that you kind of "need" this cd in order to be at peace with yourself… (Sorry.) ;-)
I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 8.8/10; Performance = 9.0/10; Production = 7/10; CD length = 5/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 8.2 ("4 stars")
