This CD presents a Soviet musician Oleg Yanchenko performing works both by the composers of the 16th — 17th centuries and modern organ music.
The program starts with Prelude and Fugue in G minor by Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583 — 1643) — the head of the Italian organ school, who played organ at St. Peter's in Rome. Girolamo Frescobaldi, being a great composer, is often called "Italian Bach". In his art G. Frescobaldi summarized and elevated the achievements of his predecessors, simultaneously outlining the turn to barocco. His main task Frescobaldi saw in expressing emotions, in influence upon listeners.
"Ricercar arioso" belongs to the influential Italian composer of the 16th century, representative of the Venice school, organist at St. Mark's — Andrea Gabrieli (1510 — 1586). Gabrieli wrote choral church music of large form, numerous madrigals, pieces for organ. The composer uses typical principles of vocal polyphony in the instrumental piece performed by Oleg Yanchenko.
Four pieces from "Arte de taner Fantasia" by Tomas de Santa Maria (1565) are notable for their strict polyphony. T. de Santa Maria (1510 — 1570) is a Spanish composer and teacher, Dominican monk of St. Maria Monastery, an educated person of his time.
The group of works belonging to the pre-Bach period is completed by Prelude and Fugue in E minor by Dietrich Buxtehude (1637 — 1707), a person much esteemed in his own days, master of Northern-German school. Large organ works by D. Buxtehude are concert pieces, effective, pathetically expressive, virtuosic.
Comparison in the framework of one program between the early and modern music is not accidental: pieces by Alfred Schnittke and grandiose composition by Oleg Yanchenko with all the features of modern music language are written in course of characteristic symbolics, connected with philosophical meditations, deep immersion into the spiritual world. Composers perceive the organ as a representative of ancient artistic traditions, rich historical past.
"Two Little Pieces" by Alfred Schnittke are written in stern, mournful tones. They bear the author's typical intellectual origin, source, deep philosophical message.
Organ composition "Dom zu Speyer" was written by O. Yanchenko at the request of the city in 1987. After the premiere in July 1987 in Cambridge, Yanchenko's work was a success at the Cathedral of Speyer at the International Organists Competition.
