“Dream Theater” is one of the longest-enduring names in prog metal and certainly the most well-known, but as the title of this new compilation release suggests, they still have no acheived any significant level of mainstream attention. "Greatest Hit" refers, of course, to Pull Me Under, which is far and away DT’s most popular and well-known song and the only one to ever chart in the Billboard top ten. The video got a lot of play on MTV back in the early 90s. GH (+21OPCS) features a new, remixed version of the track, which is located on the "Dark" disc, along with a selection of 10 other heavier/darker-themed Dream Theater tracks. This is the "metal" disc, with aggressive favorites such as The Root of All Evil (which appreciably has the long intro section from Octavarium cut out in this version, kicking right into the riffage), the single version of Home, which is less than half as long as the original track from SFAM, Peruvian Skies as it appeared on Falling Into Infinity, The Test That Stumped Them All from the epic-length Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Sacrificed Sons, Endless Sacrifice and a version of As I Am that is abridged similarly to TROAE. The Dark disc also includes the single version of Lie, which has never been previously released on any other Dream Theater record. The Light disc, as one might guess, is the softer, less agressive side of Dream Theater, featuring a single edit of Solitary Shell, an alternate mix of Through Her Eyes, the B-side track To Live Forever, and a remixed version of Another Day. Also included are The Silent Man, Hollow Years, Lifting Shadows Off a Dream, I Walk Beside You, Disappear, and The Answer Lies Within, all in their original forms. The one thing that really irks me about this release is the shortened version of As I Am; it appears to be the radio version that got very little airplay back in 2003, as the word “fuck” is clipped out of the vocal track. The reason this irks me is because of the tone and meaning of the song. It’s just funny. Or maybe that's more of the joke? Aside from that, many favorite, and arguably better DT tracks are included on this record, some in more convenient forms than they were originally released, and if you are not a huge Dream Theater fan this is a great way to just pop in a CD and enjoy their better songs with ease. It’s almost the exact selection I would personally choose as a fan if someone asked me to make a Dream Theater mix disc. And aside from that, I chuckled at the title. If you’re a huge DT fan who has everything they’ve done, as many of their fans do, it isn’t really necessary to add this release to your library, but if you aren’t terribly big on their music and just want an easy way to enjoy some favorites, this release might be good to pick up.
