With a name like Diabulus In Musica, you might expect a band inspired by Slayer (their 1998 CD was called Diabolus In Musica). Secrets is about as far from Slayer as you're going to get. The Spanish band's full-length debut is symphonic/gothic metal with a female vocalist.
There are some male growling vocals, but Zuberoa Aznárez does the majority of the singing. Diabulus In Musica plays bombastic symphonic metal laden with atmospheric keyboards and strings, but also plenty of crunchy guitars. After an instrumental intro, “Come To Paradise” is a powerful opener, very cinematic and dramatic with the soprano vocals giving it a classical feel.
The bombast abates on “Lonely Soul,” a subdued piano based ballad. It's a nice change of pace, and Aznárez also sings in a lower range with vulnerability and emotion. However, following it with “The Seventh Gate,” an instrumental, seems redundant. It would have fit better elsewhere, or not at all. DIM rebounds with “Ishtar,” a Middle Eastern tinged track with some growling vocals in addition to the melodic singing.
After keeping the songs in the 4 minute range, the last two tracks are longer and more epic. The closer, “St. Michael's Nightmare,” clocks in at nearly 8 minutes. It's a well rounded and varied way to end the album, showcasing Diabulus In Musica's melodic side, but also injecting intensity and some groovy riffs. Secrets is skillfully arranged and well played, but could use a few more hooks and memorable choruses.
