DJ Cam Quartet - The Soulshine Session (2016)

The Soulshine Session album is DJ Cam Quartet‘s fourth album and it was released at the beginning of 2016 (January 8th). The album consists of 8 songs which are full of groovy, jazzy and funky vibe. Where the previous releases were closer to hip-hop, the latest album is all about live instruments and jazz sounds (you can’t even find vinyl scratching) – there is no atmospheric and lo-fi jazzy hip-hop, which used to be very present in Daumail‘s older DJ Cam releases.

The band’s performance in The Soulshine Session is solid and the sound is very professional. What I really like is the way how the classic DJ Cam songs have been remixed and reformatted into a totally new shape. Some of the songs are quite difficult to recognize but some have the familiar elements still there. Take e.g. “Dieu Reconnaîtra Les Siens” which sounds almost like the original song (from the revolutionary Underground Vibes album) but still manages to give a fresh angle.

In addition to “Dieu Reconnaîtra Les Siens“, my personal favorites are “Gansta Shit” with its chill-out beginning and energetic Japanese nu-jazz outro; “Angel Heart” with the funky vibe and Eric Legnini‘s keyboard skills; and the uplifting “Un Été à Paris” recycling the 2002 “Summer In Paris” single for Anggun (which reused a theme from Dudley Moore Trio‘s “Amalgam“).

The Soulshine Session is a great album for the fans of funky jazz and nu-jazz. It is a must for those loving DJ Cam‘s music. Nice to hear that Laurent Daumail is still going strong!
