Curtis Mayfield - Love Songs, Vol. 1 (2014)

Curtis Mayfield did it all, from playing guitar to arranging and producing recording sessions to running his own label. He also wrote songs, and great ones, like "People Get Ready," that should make the personal, social, and political soundtrack of just about everyone in the late 20th century. He also wrote scores of beautiful love songs, all of which sounded exactly like Curtis Mayfield, which was great if you got it, pretty repetitive if you didn't. This set features 15 of Mayfield's post-Impressions love songs, including the almost-country "Dirty Laundry," the gentle and assured "What You Gawn Do?," and a soothing plea for solace, "Just Ease My Mind," but there's a whole lot more of them out there. Mayfield tended to hit the same graceful flow with these, and if you're in the mood, it's perfect. Otherwise it sounds like one huge Curtis Mayfield love song.
