FUN TIME is an apt description for Count Basie's music. A consummate entertainer as well as a brilliant musical artist, Basie knew how to get the audience bouncing to the sounds of his big band, even 30 years after the heyday of the genre. This 1975 album features Basie on stage in Montreux, Switzerland, playing a blues-influenced set of tunes with players including, among others, trombonist Al Grey and tenor man Jimmy Forrest.Basie knew who his stars were, and here Forrest and Grey shine like beacons. Paying homage to his idol Coleman Hawkins, Forrest delivers an unforgettable solo on a heartwarming version of "Body and Soul," incorporating breathy long tones and a bluesy bravado. In addition, the inimitable Al Grey provides some sassy muted trombone on "Good Time Blues," and drummer Butch Miles plays a wonderful Buddy Rich-influenced solo on "Whirley Bird." FUN TIME is an exuberant recording and an exhilarating listen.
