Terse, enigmatic, pointillistic, tongue-in-cheek, music a modern Satie could have written. It could be accompaniment music for a theatre play by Samuel Beckett, or for a film of Jacques Tati. Did I like it? "Sort of" would be an answer in keeping with the music's character. I enjoy Satie's terse, enigmatic and tongue-in-cheek orchestral pieces, as well. Sort of.
And this would have been the shortest review I'd written so far as well, but let me add a comment on the liner notes: they are excellent and thoroughly informative, and different in English (with a presentation by Wolff himself of the two sets of 18 Exercices in all, "footnotes to the Exercises" by the flutist Eberhard Blum and a presentation of the composer by Art Lange) and in French (an essay by Jean Vermeil). In German the same texts by Wolff and Blum are featured, BUT Blum also contributes a kind of footnote to his footnotes, which has not been translated in English. Too bad, as it explains why NOT the complete 18 Exercises but only 10 (and namely 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 12, 15, 16, 18) were perfomed in a concert given in Darmstadt on August 4 1994 and subsequently recorded here: Wolff's unique style is that much in his scores in left indetermined and to the performers' choice. Not only did it appear that playing the 18 pieces in a concert would be way above the performers and the audiences physical capabilities, but more fundamentally, deciding who would play what and how apparently involved heated discussions between the performers, and they could not reach agreement on the remainder. Curiously Blum mentions that 11 pieces were played on that Darmstadt concert, but only 10 are recorded here. The 11th must have been left to recording indeterminacy.
