A well-chosen retrospective, mostly drawn from the band's two studio albums. Not in the upper echelon of British blues, but not far from that level either, showing Rory Gallagher capable of a wider compositional and interpretive range than some listeners may recall.Review by Richie Unterberger, Allmusic.com
I was hoping that this compilation would be a find, and boy oh boy what a find!
Rory Gallagher was lucky to have family members with him, and supervising his early career with their considerable experience. And perhaps it might be true that this was one of the reasons he decided to go it all alone; but I just don't know for sure. Had he stayed with his band "Taste" we can only dream about what things they could have done together. It is a certainty that these guys got on with it, and really did make some superb music together.
This compilation starts with rock, then goes all 'tons of sobs', then it gets proper jazzy (even modern jazzy-cool) and finally we end up with a mixture of the best funky blues rock anthems you can get! As a matter of fact, we thought that there were at least four bits in this album where you can recognize the development of some of the later "standard Gallagher riffs" that we all know so well.
Any way, the best thing is to have a listen, and thoroughly enjoy this very special insight that treats us to even more early Rory. Terrific value.Review by Dr J Smalhouse, Amazon.co.uk
