Europe should have been delighted and proud to have had (and still have) one of the most representative thrash metal bands in its territory. Instead of looking at the other part of the ocean, it should have been sufficient for the metalheads to look closer and more carefully to discover one of the greatest bands that this genre ever gave us. These Artillery from Denmark are easily one of the best and, unfortunately, one of the most overlooked bands in the history. Their skills and power immediately caught the attention and the respect of a quite large but silent slice of people that were practising their cult in the underground, with constancy and loyalty, like this band always did.
The first thing you can think about them, after “Thrash metal from Legends!” is the word “passion”. This is what they are about and this debut, like the other albums in their discography, is an obligatory stopover and a Mecca for the thrash metal fan. The one and only that was so pure at the middle of the 80s. No innovations, no will to be sweet and gentle; just pure aggression and hyper speed. This is where the first form of speed metal that exploded at the beginning of the 80s is filtered through the energy and the violence of the first wave of thrash metal.

This Fear Of Tomorrow starts with a sounds of shots to continue with the first thrash/speed metal assault. The production is not so clear and the drums are a bit hidden in the background to prefer the guitars loud sounds. By the way, everything is perfectly audible and to appreciate it you must also forget about modern and polished productions. This is thrash and it doesn’t need your pathetic and commercial productions! The tempo parts are in fast succession and the up tempos are never too impulsive because sometimes they are mixed also with more technical and complex parts. The solos are just great and with this production, they seem ever more powerful. The first thing that you can immediately notice, along with the very good music, is the vocal style by the TRUE, the ONE and ONLY singer that deserves to be credited as one in the history of this band: Flemming Ronsdorf. He’s just one of the most personal, characteristic singers in this genre. His tone is not common and truly hard to put in words. He’s powerful and unique in its not so melodic but catchy style. The best thing is to hear it by yourselves.

The most fitting example of his inimitable style is “The Almighty” song where he gives the melody to the entire song, both in the verses and the refrains. Although, the refrain of “Show Your Hate” is great and the speed restarts of this song are just blowing. The energetic, killer and intricate riffage is mixed with more simple and devastating fast parts where the patterns, still remaining quite complex, are always catchy and powerful. And this happens in all the compositions here. What I’ve always found truly great on this album is the intensity it achieves to transmit to the listeners even during the mid-paced parts (“King Thy Name is Slayer”). A track like “Out Of The Sky”, with all its burden of a “ready to explode” anger is just amazing. And then, when it does explode is even unbelievable. The classic speed metal influences this time are far heavier and the refrain is always perfectly stuck and recognizable. “Into the Universe” is very similar for the total impact style and the vocals always give the right catchiness to the track. This is a perfect combination of opposites. By the way, they are not pop style, but they conserve always a right rawness.

The title track is a sheer assault diluted in three minutes and even this time the vocals are great and more melodic by the refrain. The guitars duets are the most technical side of the band and the solos are always a mix of hyper fast tremolo pickings and tapping parts. The sudden restarts by the drums are truly shocking. The last “Deeds Of Darkness” is the longest song here and during the mid-paced parts there’s the spectrum of Hellhammer flying over. The atmosphere here is darker but the speed parts contribute in filling the sound with galloping parts and fast up tempo parts. So, we reach the end of this 40 minute bloodbath and we are stunned. The guitars tune is still in my ears and it won’t come out. This band was exceptional at the time. They were filled with anger and desire of destroying everything, but always through a great songwriting and intelligent compositions. Don’t let this album be forgotten and covered by the dust of time.

The second offering from the Danish thrash posse Artillery, Terror Squad is, much like its successor By Inheritance, a prime example of the quality that can result when technical thrash and melody collide. The musicianship displayed on this album is astounding, and an apt demonstration of the sheer talent that resides in this band.

Perhaps the first thing one notices when the opener, “The Challenge”, starts is the great, crisp production that this album possesses (especially impressive for an album from 1987). There is not a note missing or sullied in this intricate riff-fest, letting the guitars (the obvious focal point of the album) truly shine. The riffs are constant and catchy, supporting the speedy leads. Even on the slower songs, such as the title track, the guitars maintain a good crunchy rhythm, perfect for the headbanging frenzy that this album is sure to induce. Flemming Rönsdorf’s vocals are quite good as well, especially when he belts out the high notes, as in the chorus of “Terror Squad”. Overall, he does a good job of keeping up with the rapid guitar assault, though his vocals do deviate from his otherwise consistent performance on a few tracks.

The tracks themselves are all pretty solid. “The Challenge” is a suitable opener, “Terror Squad” truly does itself great justice as the title track, and “Let There Be Sin”, “At War with Science” and “Decapitation of Deviants” are all top-notch.

Really, each member is performing more or less at their peak here. Sandau maintains good, pounding rhythms, which mingle with Michael Stützer’s impressively skillful, blisteringly intense leads in a symphony of intricate guitar work. The bass is well done, with the occasional solo and the drums are suitable for the music. As previously mentioned, Rönsdorf performs admirably on most of the material, adding icing to the cake. All in all, these elements come together to make an excellent album, showcasing the rawer side of Artillery. Pick it up if you enjoy hearing some interesting technicality with your thrash fix. This album is deserving of every bit of its reputation.

Every so often, an album comes along in your life that is you become so connected to, so addicted towards that you desire nothing more than to scream it to the world. To rain its praises upon the deaf ears surrounding you and catapult it unto the constellations. Artillery's triumphant third full-length By Inheritance was one such work when when I was naught more than an acne encrusted adolescent. An album of almost immeasurable effort, with an anomalous sense of melody and perhaps the best pair of blood-tied relatives to ever wield guitars in tandem. I speak of course of Michael and Morten Stützer, the latter of whom transitioned to the 2nd guitar slot, replacing Jørgen Sandau, and opening the bass gig to one Peter Thorslund.

Turns out that this was one of the greatest moves in thrash history, because combined, these two weave riffs like no other duo I've ever heard, and the Danes achieved a level of brilliant but welcome complexity to which their prior efforts seemed only a crude warm up. It's almost as if there were some sinister, blood-twined psychic link between the two, and not at all fair. They built structure upon structure of unforgettable fire to each of the nine originals pieces here, mixed brazenly with Flemming Rønsdorf's most enthusiastic and endearing vocal performance, and the explosive Nielsen/Thorslund rhythm section. This was a band at their peak, when the walls of the thrash genre were already beginning to crumble around them, and it's a capital offense that so many devotees of the dwindling format let this slide on by, in their rapid and narrow sighted consumption of fare like Rust in Peace. Don't get me wrong, I love that album myself, but there's not a single (original) here without riffs more exciting than a "Holy Wars…", and very often more than a handful each!

It's a stunning conception, inaugurated by the exotic, Eastern threads of the "7:00 from Tashkent" intro, a frantic frolic that seems to summon the listener directly to the thoroughfares of the Uzbekistan capital itself. This is merged perfectly to the opening of "Khomaniac", in which we were given our first glimpse of the new Artillery, arching and dominant melodies escalated into a gloried frenzy before they drop out for Thorslund's distorted low-end grind, and then flowering through some of the most intricate patterns my young mind had ever heard. The trademark Rönsdorf howling returns, with verses and chorus even more distinct than the prior full-lengths, lyrics tearing the fallacy of holy jihad. The leads are likewise, wholly impressive, even the backing rhythm guitars woven with more finesse than most thrash bands could ever muster through their careers. Gang shouts lead up to another brilliant riff around 4:30, another provocation of goosebumps in a ceaseless, copious overload.

So, that's but one fucking song down…one and a half. The warlike hustle of Nielsen's kit breaks out "Beneath the Clay (R.I.P.)", with another bevy of unprecedented guitar glaze and an incredibly attractive, haunting chorus vocal. The basic structure of the song breathes the same airy expanse, but the riffs are equally well balanced to drag the listener through a vortex of wonder. "By Inheritance" is the first to open with the cleaner guitars, but it turns out these are no less busy than their electrics, with another joyous dynamic thrust and Thorslund scaling about beneath the Stützer driven symphony. Queue "Bombfood", a soldier's lament driven through yet another segue of beautiful, clean guitars that explode into a chorus you simply will not believe as it bowls you over with its anti-war lyrical antics. Queue "Don't Believe", which once AGAIN bleeds in the shining acoustic traits to a burst of testosterone and life, and the band strikes you with ANOTHER intense climax.

"Life in Bondage" cycles and cavorts through an even more frenzied rhythmic drive, and the opening riff to "Equal at First" is unreal catchy, close in tone to the "7:00 from Tashkent" intro and busting out some of the most badass mojo on the album right beyond Flemming's 'hwah' at :35. If there was one possibility of drowning down this album's momentum, it would have been the cover of "Razamanaz". However, as a fan of the Nazareth original, I have to say it turns out to be one of the best renditions I've heard, played with the same spunk and passion as the original content here. Naturally, it doesn't spark the same level of envy in the guitar geek as the rest of By Inheritance, but against all odds it seems to fit. Lastly, the band hurl out a sequel to "In the Trash" from Terror Squad, manifest through heavily chorused clean guitars and the charming screams before the Master of Puppets-era charge begins. Just the last piece in a puzzle of perfection, with even more of the able bodied guitar work running circles about the competition.

All 40 minutes have a spacious resonance thanks to the Flemming Rasmussen production. Most will know that particular Dane from his legendary work with Metallica (1984-88), so needless to say the guy can mix a thrash album. Artillery are obviously quite a lot more melodic than the Bay Area legends, but he captures it all very well, the guitars bold and out front as they should be when this much effort has been placed in their composition. I will admit that in comparison, the rhythm section can often feel a little drowned, since they're rarely the focus, but when the guitars are this good, there is simply no cause for concern. It's an emotional, empowered slab of creative speed, a flawless album that should have had this band's name perched on the tongue of every hesher from here to eternity. They've never released a bad album (even in their reunion period thus far); but this is clearly the summit, and I can only think of a small handful of discs in my entire metallic collection that could hold a candle to it. Acquire at any cost, even if you've got to carve out and auction off a few organs in the process.

Like most thrashers, I only had one question in my mind before listening to this album: will it be as good as their classic albums? It didn't take me long to figure out that this wasn't as good as their classic albums … this IS a classic album. First of all, this is neither an exact replica of their old work nor a half-assed attempt at selling out. Those wanting to hear By Inheritance 2 or Torture Squad 2 are warned; this is quite different from the older albums. It’s not pure thrash either, but more about that later.

It is -as with all Artillery albums- unique. Some minor groove metal influences seem to have found their way into most of the songs, but unlike some other people this doesn't bother me at all. In fact, this provides a healthy degree of variation. Groovy riffs are mixed in with the legendary oriental-sounding Artillery riffs and neck-breaking thrash riffs. The solos seem to have a bit too much of wah attached to them at times, but this doesn't mean they aren't amazing. Quite to the contrary, the solos are miles above average (which was to be expected).

However, the riffing isn't completely consistent throughout the entire record. There are a whole lot of mind-blowing ones (the intro of Cybermind, for example) while others don't seem to go anywhere. This isn't a major issue because the amount of good riffs are amazing enough to sustain the entire album. The bass sounds good too; at times perhaps a bit too low in the mix but great lines are scattered over all the tracks. The drumming is near perfect, the only minor flaw is the sound of the snare. I'm guessing this isn't the fault of the drummer though but rather an error on the part of the engineer or producer.

Flemming delivers, as usual, an incredible performance as a vocalist. His tone has changed quite a bit compared to By Inheritance, there are less higher shrieks and when they do appear they're nowhere near the ones of the older albums. That's not to say it's bad though, not at all. A weird type of effect (I honestly have no idea what it is) makes Flemming sound very strange and artificial at times, which once again is probably a misjudgment by the producer. The effect wouldn't sound bad in minor doses but it's simply overused here.

The biggest problem on BACK seems to be the production. First of all it's not as polished and clear as By Inheritance and at times the mix even sounds raw. Depending on your preferences this might be good or bad, but to me it was a good choice and suits the music very well. But, the producer also made some mistakes. The effect on the vocals, for example, or the sound of the snare drum. As mentioned before the bass is too low in the mix at times, which is a shame because once it pops up the tone is quite good.

Overall, this is an awesome album. It has some flaws and isn't very consistent but the good parts make up for it. One of the best comeback albums I have ever heard and worth to be released under the name of Artillery. Those wondering if this is as good as their classic albums should stop worrying; this IS a classic album. I should also mention that some songs should have been b-sides in stead of put on the album. What I would have done was take the best riffs from the lesser songs and add them to the other songs - or simply have the lesser songs as bonus tracks. Recommended to … everybody.
