3Dcreative Issue 81–83 2012

Hello and welcome to the May issue of 3DCreative. In this month’s magazine we continue some of our great new tutorial series, so hopefully you will all have an exciting new project to get stuck into and fill you with inspiration!

You will notice that we’re lucky enough to have yet another amazing cover image, this time created by Anto Juricic. This image comes from the Maya version of our Character Modeling series focusing on the modeling of an old man’s head. This month, our two fantastic artists will be showing us how to model the features and detail onto the base model that was created in April’s issue. Rodrigue Pralier continues to walk us through the process in 3ds Max, whilst Anto covers Maya.

In the second part of our tutorial series covering FX, Particles and Dynamics, Matt Chandler and Mike Zugschwert move away from creating and animating water and turn their attention to smoke, with Matt working in 3ds Max and Mike in Maya. They don’t only show us how to set up the effects, but also demonstrate how to manipulate them to match an environment or scenario of your choice, making this a must-read tutorial!

Not two, but three new series were kick-started in last month’s issue, the third of these being Building Droids. Tarik Ali is our instructor this time around and he shows us how to use a 2D concept and technical drawing of a cool, sci-fi droid, provided by a talented 2D artist, and turn it into an accurate 3D model in 3ds Max.

As well as these second installments in our collection of new series, we also have another brilliant chapter from our Modeling Armored Beast’s series. Regular contributor to 3DCreative, Jose Alves da Silva, talks us through the process he used to create his armored rhino. Using and explaining extensive tools found in ZBrush 4R2, he unleashes his creativity with great effect and shows us how he created this stunning image.
The magazine is fit to burst with exciting tutorials this month, but the excitement doesn’t end there! We also have a great interview with the brilliant Etienne Jabbour, a fun Making Of by Riccardo Zema and a gallery containing some of the best of the current 3D artwork in the community, including work from Tiago Hoisel, Tim Jones, Oliver Pabilona and many more. So sit back, relax, and enjoy!

3Dcreative Issue 81–83 2012

Hello and welcome to the June issue of 3DCreative. As the weather is hotting upthis month, so are our tutorial series!

Our stunning cover has been created by Andrew Baker. We are lucky enough to be able to bring you a great interview with this impressive 3D character and concept artist, who talks to us about how he found a home at Weta Digital, how he creates his stunning images and what it’s like working on one of the most eagerly anticipated films of year: The Hobbit.

This month we see our two fantastic artists tackle the unwrapping stage of the character production series, which focuses on the modeling of an old man’s head. Now they have covered the creation and the detailing of the head models, Rodrigue Pralier shows us how to prepare the model for texturing in 3ds Max, whilst Anto Juricic presents the same process in Maya.

Continuing our tutorial series covering FX, Particles and dynamics, Matt Chandler and Mike Zugschwert show there’s no smoke without fire as they talk us through how to create realistic flames. With Matt working in 3ds Max and Mike in Maya, they demonstrate how to develop these simple particle setups to include emitters and burning fuel sources.

Moving onto the third installment of our Building Droids series, Jack Zhang takes the 2D concept and technical drawings we provided him with and shows us how to build an accurate 3D model of a fighter droid.

Christopher Brändström brings our Armored Beasts series to a close this month. In our final chapter Chris shows us how to create an armored cat by creating a basic concept process in ZBrush and composition in Photoshop, whilst throwing in some helpful pointers.
We also have a Making Of from John Thiry, where he shows us the production of his image Totem, which you may remember from the March issue’s gallery. Speaking of the gallery, we round things off by having another great selection of images from the likes of Francesc Camos, Marcus Dublin, Eve Berthelette and many more to keep you going until next time!

3Dcreative Issue 81–83 2012

Welcome to the July issue of 3DCreative! This month we continue some of our great tutorials, as well as starting an exciting new one. With this selection of inspiring tutorials, a fascinating interview, and another skillful Making Of, you won’t know where to start.

Let’s kick things off with the brilliant cover image, which is part of our building droids series. We provided Victoria Passariello with a 2D concept and technical drawings and she shows us how to build an accurate 3D model of her very useful repair droid.

Continuing our tutorial series covering FX, Particles and Dynamics, Matt Chandler and Mike Zugschwert demonstrate how to create an atmospheric snowfall. With Matt working in 3ds Max, he shows us how to achieve this by using particle flow and a number of standard space warp modifiers, whilst Mike shows us how simple making snow can be with Maya particles, by demonstrating the use of nParticles with a volume axis field and a 3D fluid container.

As we progress further into our character production series, which focuses on the modeling of an old man’s head, things are really being to take shape. So far our talented artists have covered concept creation, detailing and all the necessary preparations for texturing and shading. This time around Rodrigue Pralier and Anto Juricic move on to the actual texturing and shading, and look at using Displacement maps and photographic referencing to create realistic skin, Rodrigue using 3ds Max and Anto using Maya.

Our armored beasts series sadly came to a close last month, but do not fear, we have replaced the void with an exciting new series on creating a submarine interior level for the Unreal Games Engine! Andrew Finch will guide us through this series using programs such as 3ds Max, Photoshop and UDK, and in chapter one he starts by looking at concept sketches, before moving on to building a "white box" version of the level.

We also bring you an interview with talented character artist Paul Nelson, who has a career in the industry that spans over 10 years. Paul talks to us about the leading titles he has worked on, his route into 3D, and approach to character modeling.
As always, it doesn’t end there! We have a mystical Making Of by the imaginative Nikita Veprikov and the latest gallery selection containing some of the best current 3D artwork in the community, including pieces from talented artists such as Kris Kelly, Vlad Konstantinov and Rafael S. Benedicto.
