Sonic Temple is the fourth album by The Cult, released in 1989. In addition to being a continuation of the band's hard rock sound that was introduced on their previous album, Electric, Sonic Temple features some of the band's most popular songs, "Fire Woman", "Sun King", "Edie (Ciao Baby)" and "Sweet Soul Sister". With this album, The Cult obtained critical and commercial success with a ranking of #10 on the Billboard 200. Sonic Temple was also the last album recorded with long time bassist Jamie Stewart, who left in 1990. After his departure, the band's music would take a different direction on their next album, 1991's Ceremony.

Sonic Temple follows The Cult's critically acclaimed 1987 album Electric. The album marked the first time Bob Rock produced an album by the band (he would later produce the band's 1994 self-titled album and its 2001 follow up Beyond Good and Evil). The album got The Cult's highest chart position in the U.S., peaking at #10 on the Billboard 200 charts and was certified Platinum by the RIAA in 1993.

In Argentina the record was released as Templo Sonico, and with the titles translated into Spanish on the jacket sleeve and record labels. In Taiwan, it was released with a pink cover, and reportedly some of these were also distributed in mainland China.

The album cover features guitarist Billy Duffy with his Gibson Les Paul and in the background features vocalist Ian Astbury. An additional illustration in the CD booklet and cassette insert features bassist Jamie Stewart.

Singles

"Fire Woman" is a rock song by the band The Cult, written by singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy. It was the first single released from their fourth studio album Sonic Temple, and was subsequently featured on all of The Cult's compilation/ greatest hits albums, as well as being a steady fixture of the band's live performances.

It peaked at #2 on the U.S. Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and #46 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. It reached #1 on the New Zealand Singles Chart and #15 on the UK Singles Chart. Two remixed versions of the song were released as B-sides or promos - the "LA Rock Mix" and the "NYC Rock Mix".

This song has also been used during the closing credits of every Australian broadcast of the Formula One 2007 season to date.

Crush 40, best known for their contributions to the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series, featured a cover of "Fire Woman" as part of their 2009 compilation album The Best of Crush 40 - Super Sonic Songs.

"Edie (Ciao Baby)'" is hard rock song by English band The Cult. It appeared on their fourth studio album Sonic Temple in 1989. It was also released as the second single from that album in 1989. A promotional video was also created. An acoustic version of the song was released in 2000 on the compilation album The Best of Rare Cult.

The Edie in the song, is Edie Sedgwick, one of Andy Warhol's actresses.

"Edie was inspired when I was in New York City when we were recording the Electric album. I have several friends there involved in the fashion industry and one in particular turned me on to a movie called Ciao Manhattan! I became extremely interested in the Velvet Underground and the Warhol period." - Ian Astbury (1989). The cover of the single features the iconic Ciao! Manhattan photo.

"Sweet Soul Sister" is a song by English hard rock band The Cult. It was first released on their 1989 album Sonic Temple, and was later released as a single. It reached number 42 in the UK Singles Chart, while peaking at number 14 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in the US.

Ian Astbury stated in an interview that he wrote the song about the Americanization of European culture.

"Several images sprang to mind as I was writing this song, it was kind of an observation of how European youth is becoming somewhat reluctantly Americanized. You know the references to the Star Spangled Banner. But again with all my lyrics I like to leave them open to people's interpretations and hope that people find themselves inside my songs." - Ian Astbury (1989)

During a 2010 live concert in The Hague, Netherlands, Astbury told the crowd "That song is written about Angela Davis, incredible woman, Black Panther, activist, feminist, radical thinker."

Review

by Steve Huey

More varied than its predecessor, Electric, Sonic Temple finds the Cult trying several different metal styles, from crunchy Electric-era '70s grooves and the fuzzy, noisy psychedelia of Love, to mellow ballads and commercial '80s hard rock. Not all of the experiments work, as some of the songs lean toward ponderousness, but enough of them do to send Sonic Temple into the Billboard Top Ten, due to the exposure provided by the hit single "Fire Woman."

AllMusic 3.5/5 Stars

If you ever wondered what power chords sounded like, this is the album. Billy Duffy takes a page out of the AC/DC handbook, and provides simple chord changes against the solid background of bass and drums played by Jamie Stewart and Mickey Curry respectively. This is a solid, tough band. If you were building a house, the Cult would be your basement. They are solid, hard-driving and water-tight. Top it off with the aggressive (not screaming) vocals of Ian Astbury and soon you'll be rockin' the house ! This sounds like Seattle rock before it was hip. Turn it up loud and it sounds better ! And better than most bands from the west U.S., they actually know how to play leads and do some instrumental fills. The Cult's only downfall is a tendency to fall into the same tendencies to play slow driving grooves, not allowing much room for innovation. However, their weakness is their strength. AC/DC did it first and no one else could top them. I believe that the Cult has added just a bit of alternative flavor ,a bit more musicianship and they've come out with a mix that can only be rivaled by bands like Stone Temple Pilots and Pearl Jam. In the final analysis, Sonic Temple is still not even the Cult's best album. But damn it is GOOD ! It sure beats coffee in the morning ! Grade : A-, and I'm a tough grader……
