Review:

I first bought this album (as an L.P.) in the late '70s when I heard the song "Northern lights". The title of this song recalls the phenomenon of those summertime lights that appear in the late evening sky. The beauty of their magic colours and patterns, and the direction from which they come bring thoughts of the one who is loved. The sound is an inimitable syncretism of progressive (but light and gentle) rock, folk and even elements of classical music.

The songs are all melodic and punctuated by impressive musical introductions or solos. Apart from the aforementioned hit song 'Northern Lights', other tracks were also heard occasionally. For instance, the song "Back Home Once Again" was adopted as the theme tune for a British televion series called "The Paper Boys". The other pieces, despite their high quality were perhaps too long in duration to be played regularly on the radio. Yet the melodies are so perfectly constructed and beautiful that there seems something almost familiar about them, even on the first listening.

What enhances the music is the very special voice of the lead singer Annie Haslam. Although she since made a solo career after the group disbanded, the group at the time was not known as Annie Haslam and Renaissance, but simply Renaissance. However, her voice is, of course, the hallmark of the group. Not only does her incredible voice exceed three octaves in range but it is beautifully clear. This group also comprises some of the greatest musicians ever to have existed in the world of popular music - notably the guitarists John Camp and Michael Dunford (who composed most of the songs) and the keyboards player John Tout.

The poetic lyrics were written by Thatcher. The absence of her contribution on some of the group's later albums detracts somewhat from the overall quality of the songs. This is music for dreaming, for letting your soul free to travel - and for thinking; or perhaps it is even for forgetting one's thoughts and worries, for a while at least.
