SACD technology removes the last barrier to experiencing the full sonic impact of this magnificent Berlioz Requiem recording. The sound emerges with a new clarity and spatial definition, which provides a vivid sense of Boston's Symphony Hall and works to great effect in the massive Tuba mirum, where you can pinpoint brass, percussion, and male and female choirs. It's also notable in the quieter sections, especially the Agnus Dei with its strange interplay of low brass, winds, and choir. There's still some slight distortion in the loudest choral passages, but not so much that it's distracting (a lot of it sounds like hall reverb).
Charles Munch's interpretation is unparalleled in its beauty and intensity, with extraordinary playing by the Boston Symphony and top-notch singing by the New England Conservatory Chorus. This is a performance that holds your attention from first note to last–a rare feat in this work. (Munch's later Deutsche Grammophon effort pales by comparison, both sonically and interpretively.) If you want this Berlioz Requiem (and you do), SACD is the way to hear it.
