Beggars Opera were a progressive rock band from Glasgow, Scotland, and were formed in Glasgow in 1969 by guitarist Ricky Gardiner.

Members: Ricky Gardiner (Guitar) (born Richard Gardner, in 1948, in Edinburgh, Lothian, Scotland), Alan Park (Organ) (born 10 May 1951, in Glasgow, Strathclyde, Scotland), Martin Griffiths (Vox), and Marshall Erskine (Bass) and Raymond Wilson (Drums). Virginia Scott (Mellotron) (born in 1948, in Glasgow, Strathclyde, Scotland) and Gordon Sellar (Bass) (born 13 June 1947, in Glasgow, Strathclyde, Scotland) joined in 1971.

Vertigo Records soon signed them and they recorded 4 Albums:

Act One : 1970
Waters of Change: 1971
Pathfinder: 1972
Get Your Dog Off Me: 1973

Pete Scott replaced Martin Griffiths in 1972, and Linnie Paterson replaced Pete Scott in 1973.

Time Machine from the Waters of Change album was successful in Germany, where the band toured extensively.

They played at the Speyer Great British Meeting of 1971 and on Beat Club , Bremen.

In 1975/76 a cut down Beggars Opera recorded two albums for Jupiter records in Germany. Sagittary: Ricky Gardiner (Guitar), Pete Scott (Vox), Virginia Scott (Keys and Vox) and Mike Travis (Drums)
Beggars Can't Be Choosers same line up but with Clem Cattini (Drums)

Ricky Gardiner (guitarist) went on to play for David Bowie on the Low album and with Iggy Pop on the Lust for Life album as well as the famed Idiot tour of 1976. He co-wrote The Passenger with Iggy Pop.

Alan Park (organist) worked with Sir Cliff Richard for many years as musical director. wikipedia

4 stars Swimming in mellotron

"Waters of change" was Beggar's opera's best album in my opinion, full of strong melodies and well constructed songs. Having introduced themselves with the innovative, classically driven "Act one", the band invested in a mellotron, which instantly became the dominant instrument in their sound. The band moved away from the intricate symphonic prog of their first album, towards the art rock of the Moody Blues and Barclay James Harvest.

The stately "Time machine" opens the album the mellotron sound instantly swirling behind the rich distinctive vocals of Martin Griffiths. The best track for me is "Silver peacock", a deceptively straight forward song, with more excellent keyboard work, a superb melody, and atmospheric vocals. There is a coherence and continuity to the tracks which allows the album a flow well.

A few more albums like this, and Beggar's Opera could have been as big as their art rock peers. Unfortunately after one more quality album, they were to quickly run out of steam. Easy Livin @ progarchives.com
