Richard Thompson - Mirror Blue
Folk Rock | FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/192 kHz | 55:13 min | 2.30 GB | Digital booklet
Label: Capitol Records | Tracks: 13 | Rls.date: 1994/2016

1991's Rumor and Sigh was among Richard Thompson's best-selling and most warmly received albums, even gaining a bit of radio and MTV exposure which introduced Thompson to a wider audience than ever before. But while Thompson has often expressed his desire to reach a greater number of listeners, he's (thankfully) unwilling to dumb his music down, and it's probably no coincidence that he followed up his most user-friendly album with the more difficult Mirror Blue.

Label: Capitol Records | Tracks: 19 | Rls.date: 1996/2016

Sometimes even a legend just wants to have fun. Having gradually achieved his lofty position as a titan of British folk-rock and as one of Britain's finest songwriters, Richard Thompson allows his instincts as a sublime guitarist to dominate this casually brilliant double album.

Label: Rhino/Elektra | Tracks: 10 | Rls.date: 1980/2016

For their third album, 1980's Panorama, the Cars decided to challenge their fans with an album unlike its predecessors. Whereas The Cars and Candy-O were both comprised of instantly catchy and distinctly tuneful songs, Panorama was much darker and not as obvious — an attempt at breaking away from the expected winning formula. Still, the album was embraced by their fans and hit number five on the charts, although it was the only Cars release not to spawn a true hit single (the closest thing to a hit was "Touch and Go," which peaked at number 37).

Classical | FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | 93:39 min | 1.74 GB | Digital booklet
Label: Harmonia Mundi | Tracks: 12 | Rls.date: 2014

When he dedicated a set of six quartets to Haydn in 1785, Mozart was acknowledging the latter's supremacy in this genre. However, Mozart did more than just imitate him; he integrated Haydn's innovations into his own style, thereby producing a new milestone of Viennese Classicism. The three quartets played here by Cuarteto Casals are among Mozart's finest and are truly masterpieces of the genre.

Label: Rhino/Elektra | Tracks: 09 | Rls.date: 1981/2016

By augmenting their sound with more synthesizers, electronics, and drum machines, the Cars' fourth release, Shake It Up, helped bridge their hard rock-based early work (1978's The Cars) with the futuristic-pop direction of 1984's Heartbeat City. The band's sound may have been evolving with each succeeding album, but Ric Ocasek was still writing compelling new wave compositions despite all the change, many of which would ultimately become rock & roll standards.

Label: Warner Classics | Tracks: 55 | Rls.date: 2016

With his extraordinary pianistic talents, Turkish pianist Fazıl Say has been touching audiences and critics alike for more than twenty-five years, in a way that has become rare in the increasingly materialistic and elaborately organised classical music world. He is a pianist, composer and director with firm reputation in Europe, Asia and the US. After spending five years under David Levine at the Robert Schumann Institute in Düsseldorf and further studies at the Berlin Conservatory he came to international attention 1994 when he was the winner of the Young Concert Artists International Auditions.

Label: Rhino/Warner Bros. | Tracks: 14 | Rls.date: 2000/2015

Never let it be said that Lou Reed has lost the ability to surprise his audience; who would have thought that at the age of 58, on his first album of the new millennium, Reed would offer us an 18-minute guitar distortion workout with lyrics abut kinky sex, dangerous drugs, and (here's the surprise) imagining what it would be like to be a possum?

There are in all fty-eight mazurkas by Chopin. Pavel Kolesnikov, making a welcome second recording for Hyperion, here performs a selection of twenty-four, from the earliest examples dating from his teenage years, through to the rich maturity of Op 59 No 2 from 1845.

Progressive Rock | FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | 44:44 min | 961 MB | Digital booklet
Label: BMG Rights Management | Tracks: 08 | Rls.date: 1973/2016

Emerson, Lake & Palmer's most successful and well-realized album (after their first), and their most ambitious as a group, as well as their loudest, Brain Salad Surgery was also the most steeped in electronic sounds of any of their records. The main focus, thanks to the three-part "Karn Evil 9," is sci-fi rock, approached with a volume and vengeance that stretched the art rock audience's tolerance to its outer limit, but also managed to appeal to the metal audience in ways that little of Trilogy did.

Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür s Seventh Symphony (2009), dedicated to the Dalai Lama, is a choral symphony like no other. It is a powerful vector-based work in Tüür s new compositional mode, in which the orchestra only intermittently frames and supports the voices. The texts that the NDR Choir sings include words of the Buddha from the Dhammapada but also utterances of more contemporary visionaries, from Gandhi to Mother Theresa.

Giuseppe Sinopoli projects Liszt’s “Mephistopheles” with such unrelenting urgency that he could as well be fighting the devil in person. True, the recorded balance keeps the strings fairly close at hand (the actual sound image is not dissimilar to EMI’s on their Masur/Leipzig Liszt series), but the playing itself has real drive and panache, frequently throwing caution to the winds in pursuit of maximum spontaneity (as regards tempo, Sinopoli beats Bernstein to the finishing post by no less than ten minutes).

Lured out of retirement by bassist Ray Brown after taking extensive time off from the road, pianist Gene Harris recorded extensively from the mid-'80s until shortly before his untimely death in early 2000. This is the second Resonance CD to come from a 1996 engagement at London's Pizza Express, features the pianist with a group of European musicians (Scottish guitarist Jim Mullen plus two Englishmen, bassist Andrew Clyendert and drummer Martin Drew, the latter of whom worked extensively with Oscar Peterson).
