Jack Hylton was the leader of one of Europe's first big bands when the Jazz craze swept over from New York to England with the big ocean liners, they often had a swing big band on board. From England he toured Europe intensively in the late 20s, also adding local artists to his band and recording locally, which added a lot to his world-wide success. When he played in Germany in the 30s the Nazis didn't accept black musicians on stage, and later not even lyrics in foreign language. On his website there are loads of free downloads, also one from a concert at Berlin's "Scala" Theater in 1938, here's a photo from that show:
In the 40s he discovered Shirley Bassey when he looked for a singer to join his band, and he helped to start many more careers.
Please note the syncopations on side 1, reminding very much of later Ska and Reggae. Somewhere I read that the Skatalites worked as Jazz musicians on one of these ocean liners before they invented ska back home in Jamaica mixing Swing with local Mento and Calypso rhythms.
