The author tells a good-natured story with a keen eye for the humorous. It is quite a contrast to the class of heavy novels in which the speakers are always talking as grandly and solemnly as a book. We are reminded by it more of Dickens than of Scott. The trial of the great case of Simon Kump vs. The Salt Water Canal Company is depicted very effectively. Much of the dialogue is rattlingly bright; and the whole story is written in quite an enjoyable vein. –This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.
