The Abyss Beyond Dreams: A Novel of the Commonwealth

Peter F. Hamilton "The Abyss Beyond Dreams: A Novel of the Commonwealth"

Wow! This was really an interesting read. This is my first book by Peter Hamilton so I thought I would be safe to start here because it's only a two book series. Well, evidently I didn't read enough of the description because it might only have two books in this Chronicle of the Fallers series, but everything goes back to the books in the Commonwealth series. I got a little lost sometimes. I had the time line which is in the front of the book but I didn't start using that until I found myself saying "huh?" several times. After that I got more comfortable with what was going on.

This story had me glued to my chair seat for days because I couldn't figure out what was going to happen. How were all of these characters going to get joined up? There is an alien race who are technically supposed to be enemies with the Commonwealth but they enlist the help of Nigel Sheldon to solve the mystery of what the Void is really all about. Starships and even planets disappear into the Void and it seems to grow stronger for having absorbed these worlds. What will happen if the Void keeps growing? Would it be possible for someone to survive going into the Void to see what it is really like inside there? And, of course, in the meantime there are other planets with human populations just like the people in the Commonwealth. How do they fit into all of this?

Yes, I liked this book. It took a little bit of work for me to catch up on the previous stories to be comfortable with this one, but now I'm ready for the second part. I'm going to have to go do some investigating to see which other novels by Hamilton are about the Commonwealth. I've got a feeling I'll be doing more reading about this universe.
