Frank Zappa Guitar Book by Frank Zappa
English | 1982 | ISBN: 0711902232 | 302 Pages | PDF | 15 MB

Stev Vai transcribed these guitar solos, some of which are on Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar, some of which were never released. Vai was as accurate as possible in duplicating Zappa's rhythmic insanity, which means not just simple triplets, but triplets within triplets, quadruplets, pentuplets, and other forms of stacked up metrical madness.
Add to that the fact that Zappa could also play really fast, and it all becomes a set of solos that are truly virtuosic. Quite possibly more difficult than Paganini's violin solos or Chopin's piano pieces.
A few of the solos also include the drum parts, which are also, of course, darn near unplayably difficult.
But all wonderful! Zappa was an absolute musical genius as a composer, arranger, and definitely as a guitarist. These transcriptions are a fitting legacy for a man of almost infinite capability, transcribed by a man (Vai) who is also of almost infinite capability, and done so when he was but 18-20 years old.
And they're fun to play. I only play them perfectly poorly, but still fun.
I also like that it was not professionally typeset: it is all in Vai's own beautiful calligraphy.
Sadly out of print, but for the Zappa fan or guitarist who has become bored and wants a life-challenge, I highly recommend this one.
