Created to meet British demands for a high performance, high altitude night fighter with long endurance, Northrop Aviation started design in Nov 1940 and had a prototype flying in May 1942. These requirements, plus the bulky nature of electronics back in the early days, led to a large plane. By all accounts, the P-61 handled and flew very well. The planes were very expensive for the time and by the time they hit the Pacific and European theaters, most of the enemy had already been destroyed. I wish a little more time had been spent comparing this plane to the British Mosquito or the German He 219 night fighters.
It is hard to go wrong with the In Action Series, and this book is no exception. You get a very detailed narrative with many black and white photos, excellent captions that outline every version of the plane. All of the design changes are captured as well as color plates to show the different paint schemes.
A perfect book for modelers, those who want to learn a lot in a little package about this very specialized plane of WW2.
