The aim of the present work js to investigate the development or religious Byzantine architecture between the years 582-867 A.D. These two dates are the termini we tentatively use in order to delimit a period which elsewhere has been called the ‘Dark Ages’. Inasmuch as we will be investigating an architectural evolution, this work will also become an account and an historical investigation of the development of two major religious institutions: the cathedral church and the monastery.
