Now a staple of steampunk literature, airships have been used by the U.S. Government for hundreds of years. Balloons were vital for reconnaissance missions during the Civil War, and were later used to create bird’s eye view maps . During World War I, airships and other lighter than air (LTA) contraptions were outfitted with motors and used primarily by the Navy for spotting submarines. However, they were also used by the Air Force, and even the Postal Service. While they may seem antiquated, airships are still being used in reconnaissance by the military today.
