Following the defeat of the German forces at Stalingrad in January 1943 and the increase in the Soviet counter-offensive in January and February, the German Army needed a victory to regain its momentum. Such a victory came in March when the SS Panzer Corps recaptured Kharkov. Because of the reputation acquired by the Waffen-SS divisions and their armored units as a result of the Kharkov success, Hitler was determined to use them as much as possible throughout the remainder of the fighting in Russia. By the time the German summer offensive got underway, the Waffen-SS had expanded and the SS divisions had been redesignated as Panzer (armored) divisions. The infantry came to be known as Panzergrenadiers (mechanized infantry).
