Technology and innovation management is an inherently interdisciplinary topic.
Although many of the important research questions of the field are not central
to particular social science disciplines, such as economics or sociology, they are
of primary importance to the practice of management. Because of their lack of
centrality to core disciplines these topics would not be addressed, or would be
addressed poorly, if approached from a purely disciplinary perspective. Therefore,
this handbook takes an interdisciplinary approach to the management of technological
innovation. The chapters in this handbook are written by scholars who
themselves are interdisciplinary or who hail from a variety of fields, including
economics, organizational behavior, strategic management, marketing, operations
management, and public policy. Moreover, they review research conducted by
scholars from an even wider array of fields, including sociology, psychology, political
science, finance, and engineering design.
The handbook takes a very broad and eclectic approach to the collection of the
empirical evidence used to support theories about the management of technological
innovation. The studies reviewed in the handbook vary greatly in approach; some
are theoretical and others are empirical. The theoretical papers include both
formal, mathematical models and more verbal approaches. The empirical papers
discussed by the authors of the different chapters include simulations, case studies,
experiments, and regression analysis of cross-sectional and longitudinal survey and
archival data collected from a wide variety of sources.
