This book provides a detailed analysis of the patterns and structures of modern French. More than 250 structures are defined and each is illustrated by several examples to explain usage, with English translations. These examples are genuine samples of written and spoken French, which have been collected from newspapers, the radio, fiction, over more than thirty years of teaching by the author, Dr. Eric Astington.

This unique survey of French deals with many of the difficulties which the advanced student will encounter, helping him towards a firmer grasp of the language. The main part of the book systematically treats nouns, adjectives, verbs, pronouns, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions. Other sections deal with phonology, helping the student with aural comprehension, with sentence structure, showing how to link up sentences or marshal one's arguments for essay writing; and finally with various aspects of vocabulary, such as word-formation.
