David Smyth spent several years teaching at universities in Thailand before taking up a post as senior lecturer in Thai at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. He has published a number of books on Thai language and literature, including a grammar of Thai and translations of modern Thai novels and short stories. He is currently working on a history of the Thai novel.
