Ogata Korin, the great Japanese master of design and one of the originators of the Rimpa style and techniques of painting, lived from 1658-1718. His life thus spans the Genroku period (1688-1704), a brief but culturally definitive era of Japanese history, and his work retains its special flavor. He lived at a time when an urbanity of style in the arts generally was the reflection of an era of increasing middle-class prosperity.
That Korin was fascinated by the world of art is no surprise when his heritage and early environment are examined.
