Frank Gehry MARTa Herford

Frank O. Gehry's latest European museum building. Situated in Herford, a major centre of the German furniture industry, MARTa opened its doors to the public in December 2004. Conceived as a laboratory for redefining the relationship between art, design and industry, this fascinating complex houses art galleries, a competence centre (library and educational workshop facilities) and forum for conferences and cultural events. The gallery in the existent building has been kept a neutral White Cube. The dome, however, with its bulging curvatures that begin rising at 5 metres from a rectangular base, and the curved lines of the surrounding galleries bear Gehry's distinctive architectural signature. According to Artistic Director Jan Hoet, organiser of the 1992 Documenta and former Director of the SMAK Museum in Gent, the diverse character and atmosphere of the individual rooms provide a commensurate space for the dialogue between the traditionally discrete spheres of industry, design and art. Im Mai 2005 wurde in Herford, Zentrum der Mobelindustrie Nordrhein-Westfalens, der von Frank O. Gehry entworfene Museumsbau eroffnet. Die Galerie im bestehenden Gebaude ist neutral gehalten und entspricht der Vorstellung von einem White Cube der Dom und die umliegenden Galerien weisen dagegen den eigenwilligen Charakter von Gehrys Formensprache auf. Dabei haben die kleineren Seitengalerien geschwungene Grundlinien, wahrend der Dom einen rechtwinkligen Grundriss aufweist, mit Wolbungen erst ab einer Hohe von rund funf Metern. So finden sich im MARTa Herford ganz verschiedene Ausstellungssale, jeder mit seiner eigenen Atmosphare, «den angemessenen Raum fur die Ideen, Visionen und Impulse, die MARTa nicht zuletzt durch prospektive Ausstellungen und als Ort der Konfrontation der traditionell getrennten Bereiche Wirtschaft, Design und Kunst entwickeln wird», sagt MARTa-Direktor Jan Hoet, Documenta-Macher 1992 und bis 2004 uberaus erfolgreicher Museumsleiter des SMAK in Gent.
