In 1891 a drafted peasant from Kursk province named Nikolai Trofimovich Iziumchenko decided to adhere to the pacifist teachings of the novelist Leo Tolstoy. For refusing to bear arms, Iziumchenko was sentenced to two years in a penal battalion. This is his story, translated from its publication in a Russian-language brochure in England in 1905
