Managing the Planet: The Politics of the New Millennium (repost)

At the dawn of the third millennium, we are at a watershed of history. A new kind of politics is emerging. The ideological politics of recent centuries is giving way to a politics in which not only nations, but businesses and other groups, are having to work together to deal with planet-wide problems such as resource depletion and climate change.

It is a nexus where politics, technology, economics and the environment all meet, and new alliances and new mechanisms are being created in response. Just as with the advent of nuclear weapons, traditional approaches are no longer adequate.

Norman Moss gives a riveting and entirely persuasive account of how different the politics of the future will be from those of the past. Local party and even national interests will have to adapt to recognize the imperatives of the global consequences of our actions. As he shows, it is already beginning to happen in the negotiations over the ozone layer and climate change. But as pressures increase through loss of biodiversity, water scarcity and depletion of vital resources such as fish, forests and topsoil, so too will the politics of planetary management override other issues.
