Greek art: white marble is our first thought—temples shining in the sun, pale statues in museums. That was not how it seemed to the (ireeks, nor, as this book will show, need it to us. As many Greek statues were of bronze as of stone, apart from precious images of ivorv and gold; marble figures and buildings were picked out in color, as were the numerous buildings that were not in marble: and within, temples and porticoes and houses were adorned with tapestries and paintings. Of Greek painting on wall and panel, little enough remains. Little, but something: and there are also small works in which we can still enjoy the variety and color of Greek art—painted pottery first of all.
