Until now the classical period of German painting, from the end of the 15 th to the middle of the 16th century, has been considered mainly in terms of the work of a few great artists and their schools, or treated as a survey of the various regional groups or clans that flourished particularly in South Germany and along the Rhine. Such an approach may be valid for the second half of the 15th century because of the great variety of the artistic scene in Central Europe at that time. But when we come to the 16th century we find—what has been overlooked—that the art of the period has an overall unity and that the features common to the movement as a whole outweigh the individual achievements of any regional group. Such had already been the case in the 14th century, up to the end of the "international style"; so it was again in the 16th century.
