The FSI French Language Course was created to train diplomats, ambassadors, and Foreign Service officers the requisite language skills necessary to serve abroad in the United States Embassy in Paris, France. Today, French language instructors from universities, colleges and high schools use our remastered French language course as a foundation for providing vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation to their students.

This is a set of intensive courses for people to learn and speak French. You can find a lot of content in this collection. Actually, it would take over 4 days, non-stop, to listen to all of them! This very rich, high-quality, content can also prove a bit daunting, mainly because of its size, so will also find here some recommendations on where to start.

I recommend starting with the INTRODUCTION TO PHONOLOGY, regardless of your current level. Despite being fundamental, phonology is traditionally neglected in language classes, regardless of the language studied. Moreover, the phonology of French is very different from that of English, which makes it even more important to understand and get used to. Studying it early will prevent the creation of bad habits which turn out irritating to get rid of down the road.

What you move on to next will depend on your level. If you are a beginner, clearly start with the BASIC course. Otherwise, I suggest browsing through the BASIC and FAST courses (be it the audio or the textbook) to find something suitable to your level. Picking something you understand 70% of would be a good way to go about it, as it will be suitable enough for you to not get lost, while proving challenging enough to keep your interest.

A word on the variants of the language: Metropolitan French refers to the variant of French spoken in France, especially the continental part of France (as opposed to islands and remote territories). Sub-Saharan French refers to a variety of variants of the language spoken in Africa. The difference in pronunciation is important. People in Belgium also have an accent. How strong it is highly varies from speaker to speaker but, in the recording, it is very neutral.
