Carl Sagan was a brilliant advocate for Science and this was an outstanding example of his enthusiasm and belief in the idea that "Science has the answers" and in the philosophy of the sceptic. In the words of a reviewer: I want more scientists and science-advocates who speak like that: with such awe and reverence for the world that they live in. There used to be a time when science fiction was filled with the idea that tomorrow would be better, but that's become far less trendy of late.But why should it be? Is it so wrong to want to look to the future and think that it can be far more brilliant and inspiring than we generally expect? Why can't we look to that future with the enraptured wonderment of Carl Sagan and realize that the existence we're living right this very second is truly remarkable, and that it will only get more remarkable as we learn more about it?
I have never become less awed by the universe by learning more about it. On the contrary. The more I learn, the more incredible it is. The future is going to be filled with discoveries I doubt I can even imagine, and I can't wait for any of it. Every next second is a chance to be wowed by reality.
Note: I found this to be a fascinating book but the reader is not the best. He seems to be incapable of grasping that there might be a slight pause between paragraphs, or to denote the point where a quotation is beginning or ending. Otherwise good.
