This first edition of this standard went back on a reworked by David Gordon Wilson and completed manuscript of Frank Whitt, entitled 'Bicycle Motion'. Whitt was a British chemist with a strong interest and passion for cycling. David Gordon Wilson, also an engineer and of British origin and a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US East Coast, reported Whitts enthusiasm for cycling. The first edition of Bicycling Science was published in 1974, so came for the first recumbents on the market. Wilson was however already (since the end of the sixties) experimenting with alternative bicycle designs. In 1967 he organized a competition in this area, which also Whitt responded. That is how the contact between the later co-authors.
