La 5/7 Fighters in Action: Aircraft Number 169 by Hans-Heiri Stapfer
English | Sep. 1998 | ISBN: 0897473922 | 51 Pages | PDF | 17.7 MB

Though mention of Eastern Front air combats brings to mind images of MiGs and Yaks tangling with Luftwaffe aircraft, Lavochkin fighters played a major role in seizing air superiority over the front. La-5/7 fighters were flown by many VVS units with the top Russian ace, Kozhedub, scoring all his 62 kills in the aircraft. Hans-Heiri Stapfer details the development and combat exploits of these radial-engined saviors of the Motherland in this 1998 Squadron/Signal release.

The ever practical Russians created the La-5 by grafting a M-82 radial engine on to the frame of a LaGG-3. Armed with two or three 20mm cannons, the resulting design was in service by the fall of 1942. Various improved models appeared in the coming years with the La-7 being introduced in May 1944. The Lavochkin fighters were the equal or sometimes superior to the Bf 109s and FW 190s operated by the Luftwaffe.

In standard S/S format, the concise, informative text is complimented by dozens of photographs of aircraft and pilots along with two pages of gorgeous Don Greer color profiles.
