The C. 202 Folgore reached the flying units of the Regia Aeronautica when pilots in the front line were still flying aircraft equipped with low powered radial engines. It was the time of a great improvement in quality not only for performance in every respect, but also for the fact that the new macchine kept intact the already excellent flying characteristics of its predecessor the C. 200 Saetta (Thunderbolt). The planning and construction of the Folgore (lightning) derived from the aquisition of the rights by Italy to build the Daimler-Benz DB 601 A engine under licence. Engineer Mario Castoldi then arranged for it to be mounted on a C. 200 airframe, which had been appropriately adapted and modified. The above mentioned characteristics of ease of handling and robustness were exalted by notable improvements in the aerodynamic field, such as the adoption of a closed canopy, the care with which the engine cowling was made and the reduced fuselage section.
