This book performs the happy task of presenting the first collection by knitwear's most talented unsung hero. For years Zoe Hunt has taken my rough knitted swatches and turned them into finished garments that have won acclaim in my first three books. She taught me about finish, shape and beautifully balanced knitting. Now, after many years of giving me her energy and dedication, she astounds us with a superb design sense as well. While demonstrating in a Japanese department store at our exhibition in Tokyo, Zoe revealed a longheld dream to produce a children's book. The idea appealed at once. The chance to produce elegant colour for youngsters and to see what ideas had lain simmering in Zoe was irresistible. Back home in London Steve Lovi was equally excited, having felt it was high time for Zoe to express herself. The three of us formed a plan, with Steve the overall director of this circus of colour. As the months progressed and the work began to flow, I was thrilled by Zoe's delicious bright palette and inventive patterns. I contributed a few patterns to this collection but had much more fun playing with new colourways on her themes. Every day gave birth to several more and we have tried to pass on this sense of playing and improvising with any given theme. After the reassuring experience of seeing that even beginner knitters are capable of designing their own colour schemes, I feel confident that this book will inspire some very personal flights of fancy. The new breed of adventurous knitter will see at once that patterns and charts are just starting points to stimulate the creative input. We have included several of our own variations in the photographs, without details, to start your imagination ticking over. It's a never-ending excitement to see how different colourways, shapes or changes of scale can totally alter a design.
