The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy made its first appearance in March 1968. II has carried many nicknames through the years: Tat Albert; 'Big MAC,' 'While Elephant,' and 'FRED.' It is operat­ed by only one service, the U.S. Air Force. The C-5 Galaxy was built at Air Force Plant No. 6 in Marietta, Georgia. The contractor was known as Lockheed Aircraft (Georgia Division) wto the Co program stalled, but became die Lockheed-Georgia Company soon after that. Before the final C-5 flew off. the contractor's name had changed to Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Company. Georgia Division, and later Lockheed Martin. The company is most commonly known as simply "Lockheed." The C-5 was built in two major versions, the C-5A and the C-5B. C-5A production consisted of eighty-one aircraft built between 1965 and 1973. The C-5B program produced an additional fifty aircraft between 1984 and 1989. In the late 1980s, two C-5As were modified internally and redesignated C-5C. In 2006, the Air Force began accepting upgraded C-5s. redesignated C-5M.
