The Fishing Fleet: Husband-Hunting in the Raj

Anne de Courcy "The Fishing Fleet: Husband-Hunting in the Raj"
Harper | English | March 4, 2014 | ISBN: 006229007X | 352 pages | azw, epub, lrf, mobi | 25,7 mb

I was interested in the subject of the British Raj. The author tells the stories of some of the many British women who went to India in search of husbands. Hence the title "the Fishing Fleet''. They had the choice of Brits serving as part of the occupying force in various diverse parts of the country or from those men sent out to serve in the Indian Civil Service. The author uses primary sources from letters and journals to construct her history, organizing her material into various categories and themes. The reader is a voyeur of intimate detail of these women's lives. Some of the telling is repetitive and pedestrian, but there are just enough of those intimate details to sustain interest in this most unusual narrative, covering over a 150 years of Raj history.
