Experimental, Electronic | Flac (tracks+.cue) | 30:17 | 193 MB | Front Cover
Label: Thrill Jockey Records / THRILL 429 | Rel: 2017

The duo composes within a complex set of self-imposed parameters or rule sets and the results of their expeditions on Borders are at once minimal and visceral. Focusing on shifting timbral changes over melody, Emptyset’s work is an exploration of the relationship between rhythm, texture and space.
Each project’s framework and parameters dictate how the sound or performance evolves. In the past, Emptyset have explored the ways in which the sonic and spatial interact within different architectural contexts: often site-specific locations such as the decommissioned Trawsfynydd nuclear power station in North Wales, or the neo-gothic Woodchester Mansion. Borders takes a different approach, centering around the performative and the performer. Having each created their own tactile instruments, a six-stringed zither-like instrument and a drum, Emptyset focuses on how organic sounds interact with the analogue processes that have defined their work to date.

Deep House, Tech House | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 01:48:20 min | 261 MB
Label: Nervmusic Records – NM020 | Rel: 2017

Since launching back in 2009, Nervmusic has established itself as one of the leading outlets for atmospheric minimal funk, shuffling techno, and stripped-back deep house. The high esteem in which the Russian label is held is confirmed by the list of artists contributing to Quattroporte, a quadruple-vinyl collection of previously unheard material. Rhadoo, Melchior Productions LTD, Ion Ludwig and Metaboman all feature, delivering club-ready cuts that wring maximum emotion from the dustiest and most hypnotic of tracks. Highlights are plentiful, and include the off-kilter, Prince-inspired minimal funk of Half Hawaii's bass-heavy opener, "Skinny Papa", the percussive clicks and drifting chords of Cabanne's "Brom", and the free-jazz-goes-tech-house bump of "Abhorrent" by G76.

Les Graciés is a collaboration in the truest sense between Paris-based sound artist Gaël Segalen and Deepblak co-founder Afrikan Sciences.
Segalen’s experiments in electroacoustic sound met the wider world this year via a debut LP for Erratum, an arresting work that showcases her ability to merge hypnotic murk ala Angus MacLise with the hard concréte of Parmegiani & Reibel. Segalen’s IHearU imprint / organisation is a platform for her various doings, including psychogeographical audio works and multi-media collaborations, as well as servicing as a reference point for other contemporary female artists working across various mediums. Eric Douglas Porter aka African Sciences has been deconstructing and re-building forms of contemporary Black music since the mid-2000’s, through releases on Deepblak (the label he co-runs with Aybee) and PAN.

“The original idea (and title) for Tokyo stemmed from a chance comment. We had just finished recording a track and after playing it back one of us (we can’t remember who) said that it reminded them of Tokyo. Neither of of us had ever been to Tokyo and we realised that our entire conception of the city originated from films, TV and books. We liked this idea of creating music for a place that only existed in our minds. We weren’t interested in faithfully representing the reality of Tokyo and had no wish to make “authentic” Japanese music, we really just liked the images of Tokyo we’re regularly exposed to. We thought of this music as a form of Hi-Tech Ambience.”

With this record we also wanted to introduce more genres into the mix while staying in tone with the fact that we are a dedicated Techno label. To achieve that we've invited some of the household KOMPONENTI artists coupling them with some acts we truly admire out there even though they haven't ended up producing Techno. Yet. Plaguecourier - Scirocco (2016)
Ambient, Experimental | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 47:07 | 107 MB
Label: Sacred Phrases | Rel: 2016

Plaguecourier is the maligned, dark ambient brainchild of Harley Burkhart, the Oakland-based drummer of prog-metal heroes Wild Hunt and Dimesland. Under the grim and gloomy guise of Plaguecourier, Burkhart culls endlessly foreboding and thoroughly unsettling rifts of dark ambiance. Using a mix of processed samples, disfigured narratives, and haunted, metallic clatter, 'Scirocco' plays out like some dystopian sci-fi classic that never was. Opener "Invented Madness" kicks things off in a flurry of vaguely horrific visuals. You're left slightly broken, disoriented, and primed for the abstract events that follow. "First Divine Permission" and "Vein to Inferno" squall and wail into the ether like some cursed, malevolent spiritual cousin of Ben Frost and Tim Hecker. "Second Divine Permission" and "Scirocco" show the more fragile, somber side of Burkhart's compositions. Each track emphasizes negative space and fringe beauty over forward, superficial shock tactics. The two-song suite "Fatamorgana" and "The Devotee" continue the action with eerie curiosity, while "Shadow of the Wind" closes 'Scirocco' out with elegiac finality.

Brian Eno - Reflection (2017)
Ambient | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 53:39 | 122 MB
Label: Warp | Rel: 2017

Brian Eno presents Reflection, his new album on Warp Records.
Reflection follows in the lineage of Brian Eno’s long-running collection of ‘Ambient’ recordings that started with his 1973 collaboration with Robert Fripp, (No Pussyfooting) and 1975’s Discreet Music.
Consisting entirely of one long form composition, Reflection mirrors perfectly Brian Eno’s idea that ‘Ambient’ music is a term “to distinguish it from pieces of music that have fixed duration and rhythmically connected, locked together elements”.
Due for release on January 1st, Reflection promises to be a much-needed catharsis at the start of a brand new year.

Mirt - Random Soundtrack (2016)
Ambient, Experimental, Techno | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 45:02 | 104 MB
Label: Monotype – DRONE 1601 | Rel: 2016

"Random Soundtrack" is a kind of extended field recording or sonic Écriture automatique. It's another attempt to search the point where music and found sounds intersect. "Random Soundtrack" is a sort of sister album to last year's "Vanishing Land". Similarly to its predecessor, it is a series of interfusing recordings, compositions, scraps of field recordings, ordinary connectors. However, while "Vanishing Land" was the result of laborious shuffling a well-known material, "Random Soundtrack" is an album created in its own right, almost unconsciously. Its framework was created by some forgotten compositions and improvisations found in the memory of the recorder which coincidentally shaped a whole by themselves. Several elements that were added later only developed this sketch in a similar manner to the idea of André Breton. The album that was created this way is in fact more a synthesis of real images than a surreal vision. Quasifilm aesthetics and seemingly hypnotic sound hide a worrying thought about capturing the image of the last quiet days of the chaotic world.

People Skills - Gunshots At Crestridge (2016)
Electronic | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 44:58 | 103 MB
Label: Blackest Ever Black – BLACKEST 055 | Rel: 2016

Graciously welcoming the second full-length lp from Philadelphia’s Jesse Dewlow, recording under the moniker People Skills. The follow-up to 2014’s Siltbreeze set Tricephalic Head. Ten sunken songs, derisively adorned with rhythm and rudimentary dub effects. Bedroom elegies for the lost and irretrievable, last-ditch spells for transformation and renewal. Thurston Moore and Byron Coley likened the previous record to “South Island NZ pop played inside of an armored car”, and that description holds here: underneath the hoods of these wracked and weather-beaten recordings are melodies of disarming beauty and optimism, bordering on the (wilfully) mawkish, bubblegum ground underfoot. Each piece as time-stopping and evocative as an old photograph of someone who used to mean something. Whether speaking through stately keyboard pastorals (‘Mint Julep’), rat-arsed rock ‘n roll slur (‘89¢ Public Render’) or sulphurous aggro-electronics (the two-part title track),Gunshots At Crestridge exposes, then seeks to redeem, all our tiny acts of self-sabotage, all our sins against time. When to stay, when to go…you never got it right, not once.

Label: Good Company Records / GCR006 | Rel: 2016

Fresh from Perth's most prolific percussion den, we're proud to introduce GCR006: The keenly-awaited debut LP from local rhythm magician Phil Stroud. Presented in an absorbing listening arc and captured with crystal clarity, this self-titled slow burner is an artful and meditative journey, filled out with straight-up danceable joy.
In just over an hour, Stroud leads a pilgrimage through intricate landscapes of percussive beauty. There's the restrained, hypnotic approach of Ritual and Tribe in amongst organic house workouts with rich orchestrations. Nimble vocal motifs and shimmering flutes ride the hefty grooves of The Birds, Scintillating and Outside as field recordings surprise and delight. Fix a glass of punch in time for the smooth, melodic neo-exotica of Flow. And as the physical plane fades away, lose yourself in the shimmering ambience of Middle East, a mellow final act recalling the more mystic moods of Alice Coltrane.

Incredible, tactile and free-formed electronic composition from Berlin’s Brendan Dougherty, in which he “exploits the heavy-handed engineering of various hardware and software synthesisers, samplers and sequencers” for the ever-brilliant Entr’acte label.
Sensate explores ten pieces of pulsating, densely rich arrangements of harmonic vortices and melodic whorls giving voice to his machine’s inner thoughts in a way that’s perhaps comparable with a synaesthetic representation of google’s deep dreaming AI projections.
