The interpretations from László Paulik using a Jahann Hentschl violin (c.1750) are of an exceptional standard with assured and expressive playing of purity and precision of intonation that at times takes the breath away. In the Allegros he displays astonishing virtuosity of great elegance with clean textures and articulation. I especially loved the heavenly sounds he displays and the high degree of emotional intensity in the contemplative and affecting Adagios. The sensitive support is impeccable displaying a wide spectrum of orchestral colours. Michael Cookson

This recording is a collection of pieces taken from the two most famous 16th and 17th century treatises on dancing. Published in 1588 in the form of a dialogue between a dancing master and his pupil, the Orchésographie by Jehan Tabouret, alias Thoinot Arbeau, is probably the most widely used practical treatise in the history of the dance. Intended more for couples of dancers (the Orchésographie dealt with groups of dancers), The English Dancing Master, compiled in 1651 from English ancestral country dances, was equally successful and went through no fewer than 18 printings in twenty-fours years! These two collections contain the most celebrated dances in the traditional repertoire.

• Giuseppe Tartini’s best-known work must be his sonata for violin ‘Devil’s trill’. Now meet the virtually unknown Tartini on these three CD’s. •Tartini wrote some 200 violin sonatas. But the opuses 2 and 6 recorded here certainly belong to the less-known part of this output. Especially the opus 2 has been quite neglected by present-day performers. Enrico Casazza performs all six of them in this set. The six sonatas opus 6 are stylistically looking ahead to a new sensibility and the classical sonata.

"You can't judge a book…" And, sure enough, although Scottish fiddler John McCusker appears on the cover of this album sporting what seems to be a tufted mohawk haircut, this is not the goofy Celtic-pop fusion-fest such a picture might imply. Rather, it's a sweet set of original, inventive instrumental fiddle tunes (and one gorgeous vocal number featuring his ever-lovely partner, Kate Rusby)… A simple, understated album, and one that successfully sheds the sometimes-dour sensibilities of his old group, the Battlefield Band. Recommended! (Amazon customer)

These ricercares come from two publications, one Italian and one Spanish, intended for the instruction of instrumentalists in the tasteful practice of improvisation and ornamentation of pre-existing melodies, a practice called 'diminution' or 'division.' In other words, they are textbooks for performers and as such have served every professional wind and string player of our times as guides to historical performance practice. They are indispensible.
